Sends me a giddy feeling of knowing Holiday season is just around the corner! The cold weather that gives me finally a chance to wear my favorite sweater, Christmas playlists from our neighborhood that keeps me up early in Sunday morning, endless gatherings with my family and friends; A reminder to me to be always grateful and thankful for all the blessings that come my way and to look forward for another exciting new year – a wonderful time of the year, indeed.
Our family loves jazz music we dance to this song after we open our gifts at midnight of Christmas eve.

Because my Christmas song list is dominated by local versions, I opted for these two instead. As a child, there were recurring morning cartoon movies on the local channels starting around mid-November and ramping up during Christmas time. These two became familiar as background music being used during several scenes — one time, even as leitmotif — probably because they were in the public domain. These pieces remind me of my child-self, waking up earlier than normal because it’s “MOVIE CARTOON TIME!”. It’s November and the weather is cooling down. My brother is sitting beside me to watch and my mom, often busy with Mom Things, would often join us on her breaks. A perfect snapshot of a time when everything was uncomplicated and the worst thing that could happen was me sleeping in, missing the earlier parts of a movie that I could watch again next year.
My parents were German and that’s the song we always sang before opening the presents!!!
One of my favorites because it brings up the best childhood memories. Every year, when my family would buy our tree, my grandpa would play this song as we decorated it. Also, What’s This? From Nightmare before Christmas because it’s my favorite holiday movie and you can’t help but get the song stuck in your head for hours after you watch it.
Oh come on… who doesn’t think of a surfin’ Santa when they hear that song? It’s a feel good, sweet song that just immediately makes me smile and gets me in the holiday spirit.
This is the most special carol of the season. Its quiet beauty fills me with both joy and a sense of melancholy as I consider the history of this song that paused a war, when in 1914 a German Officer sang Silent Night, and in doing so encouraged an exchange of songs and greetings between opposing soldiers in the midst of the First World War.

Reminds me of a long due reunion of being with people you love. My sister and her family were not able to come home for more than 6 years now. Now, due to the pandemic, it seems that we have to wait for a few more years. Despite the melancholy the song gives I have high hopes that everyone will see each other again.
Captures the excitement and gratitude I feel, ending the year and starting a new one and knowing just where I’m going. It kind’a reminds me that no matter how challenging the year has been, things always find its way and love comes just in time from anyone when I need it.

I’m always excited to hear the first Christmas song on the radio right after Halloween wraps up. But I don’t really tune in until mid- December, and I turn it up when I hear Josh Groban sing “O Holy Night.” What a voice. He can sing me a financial statement footnote and I’d be happy.

I remember going to the local record store with my brother to get the ‘A Very Special Christmas’ cassette tape…specifically for this song. We listened to it over and over and over again to try and memorize the words and it drove my Mom crazy. I also love the video for Christmas In Hollis, MTV used to play it in heavy rotation during the holidays each year (when MTV used to actually play music!) and it is a classic. So good.
Aside from it’s Christmas, Weezer is my fave band, so listening to it would be just like being at home this Christmas: just warm and full of celebration with your loved ones.

As we turn a corner on the previous year, it’s good time to thank those who helped us along the way, remind those we love how much we appreciate them, and turn our attention to the year ahead.
Their vocal harmony, the overall vibe, and the upbeat music instantly puts me into a better mood. Hearing this song ultimately reminds me of the time when I was in college and got to meet some of the most awesome people with the same interests and passion in music as me.

It’s festive. And one year I changed the lyrics to be about all things “green” (as in eco-friendly) and won a podcast competition singing my rewritten rendition. So it holds a special place in my sustainability-loving and backup singer wannabe heart. (Adele, I’m waiting for your call.)
It’s kind of a sad song actually – the lyrics have to do with the loss of childhood innocence and belief in Father Christmas (Santa Claus). But as we get older, we realize that Father Christmas is a symbol, a feeling. A feeling of forgiveness, acceptance, togetherness, peace, love, the joy of giving a gift instead of receiving one. These may be considered cliché expressions to describe the holiday season – but to me they are all true.
